CHRISTMAS 2020 / NAVIDAD 2020

HUMAN REPRODUCTION

The life process of reproduction was the last one we learnt.

We learnt that the reproductive system is the only system that is different in men and women.

There are not many videos about this life process but in the following link you can watch again the two videos we saw in class.

https://happylearning.tv/en/the-reproductive-system/

INTERACTION: THE SENSES, THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

In connection with the life process of interaction we have reviewed our 5 senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch). We studied them thoroughly last year, but here you have an interesting video about the organs of sight: our eyes.I hope you find it interesting.

About the nervous system there is so much to be said that I have chosen three videos for you to have a general view. I hope you learn a little bit more.

The last, but not least in connection, is our locomotor system that we studied also last year and we study in Physical Education as well. I also found an interesting video about our skeleton.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE

In Social Science we are learning about the weather and climate.

The weather is so important that everyday we talk about the weather because it changes everyday. Now we know that it depends on four elements: temperature, wind, humidity and precipitation.

Climate is the average weather in an area over a long period of time.

I have chosen some videos for you to watch and learn more about the differences between them.

NUTRITION: THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

The respiratory system is another one of the systems in connection with the life process of nutrition.

The respiratory system gets oxygen from the air and expels carbon dioxide. All our organs and cells need energy to provide energy to our body.

Here you have some videos to watch and learn more about this system.

PLANT KINGDOM: THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Today in our Natural Science class, we learn more things about  the nutrition and respiration of plants.

Plants make their own food and in doing so they produce oxygen that send out to the atmosphere. This process is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS. And we know that photosynthesis is vital for life on Earth.

Here you have the two videos we watched so you can learn and enjoy.

ANIMALS NUTRITION

We already know that nutrition is a vital function of all living things.

According to their nutrition animals can be dividen into three groups: herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

In this video you can learn things about these three types of animals.

Enjoy and learn!

VITAL FUNCTIONS OF LIVING THINGS

We all know that living things carry out three vital functions: nutrition, interaction and reproduction.

Here you have a video that may help you learn a bit more about these life processes or vital functions. Enjoy!!!

DISCOVERIES IN ASTRONOMY

Astronomy is that part of  science that studies outer space focusing on stars, planets, comets, galaxies and so on.

We know that people started to study Astronomy as far back as in Ancient Mesopotamia. Civilizations such as Ancient Greeks, Romans or the Mayans also studied Astronomy. However all of these scientists had to observe space with just their eyes.

Aristotle, an ancient Greek astronomer, calculated that the Earth was not flat but a sphere. He observed that the Earth's shadow on the Moon was curved and that when a ship appeared on the horizon, we could see the top before the rest of the ship.

Copernicus was an astronomer that lived in the early 1500s. He came up with the idea that the Sun was the centre of the universe. This was a complete different believe from the idea that the Earth was the centre of the universe.

With the invention of the telescope in the early 1600s, scientists were able to see much further objects and were able also to have a better view of the Moon and the planets.

Galileo Galilei began to study Copernicus' work and felt that his observations of the planets were correct and that the Sun was the centre. This believe was really controversial at that time. Galileo heard of the invention of the telescope in Holland and he decided to build his own telescope. Soon Galileo's version of the telescope was used in all Europe.

Galileo made many discoveries using his telescope: the four large moons around Jupiter and the phases of the planet Venus. He also discovered sunspots and that the Moon was covered with craters. As Galileo studied the planets and the Sun he became convinced that the Earth and the other planets orbited the Sun. However the powerful Catholic Church considered his ideas heresy. At first, they sentenced him to life prison but later on they allowed him to live in his house under house arrest.

Since Galileo's time many discoveries have happened and Astronomy has advanced a great deal.
Men have landed on the Moon. We have great telescopes in the space to observe and investigate and since 2000 astronauts have lived on the International Space Station (ISS) that takes 92 minutes to orbit the Earth. Pedro Duque the first Spanish astronaut to go into space tells us about life in the ISS.

Finally, last year Nobel Prize in Physics 2019 was awarded to two astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for discovering an exoplanet orbiting a star. That means that right now there are many astronomers looking for planets orbiting stars that have water, liquid water. This is fascinating, isn't it?

NATURAL SCIENCE: REVIEWING THE 5 SENSES AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Good morning kids!!!

How are you today? I am fine and ready to work with you a little bit.

Today is Tuesday the 2nd of June and we are going to review what we learned about the human body.

We will begin by reviewing the 5 senses that give the information about the world around us.

So please watch and read at the same time this video about the five senses.

And what do we do with all the information our five senses give us?

We react... But our reactions are very different depending on the information.

That reaction is thanks to our boss: the brain which is the main organ in our nervous system

Now we are going to watch two videos about the nervous system.

The first one is very easy and in the second one we can learn a bit more about this fascinating organ: the brain.

I hope you enjoy watching the videos and learning a bit more!!!

SOCIAL SCIENCE TIME: MODERN AGE OR CONTEMPORARY AGE

Hello children!!!

Today we are going to learn some facts about the last period of History: MODERN AGE OR CONTEMPORARY AGE.

Contemporary Age began with the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 18th century and it lasts up to nowadays, beginning of the 21st century.

We already know that the Industrial Revolution, with the invention of the steam engine, caused many changes in society. People began to move from rural areas to big cities in order to work in factories. Cities began to grow but there were big differences in society. There were rich people whose children had the opportunity to go to school and poor people whose children didn't go to school but worked in factories.

This Revolution began in Great Britain but it extended all over the world. The products that we need began to be produced in factories using machines and not in small shops where products were handmade.

There was also a revolution in new technologies with the invention of the telegraph and a revolution in transportation with steam trains and boats.

Since those days there have been many changes. Everybody began to live in better conditions. All the children can now go to school and there are hospitals for everybody.

These are some of the many inventions: the radio, the television, the cinema, the car, the aeroplane, even the rockets to go to outer space and, of course, the invention of the Internet. With all this inventions, entertainment (entretenimiento) also changed.

Here you have a video about the Industrial Revolution that changed everything in society.

In your Social Science book you can read some more information at pages 94 - 95 and do exercise 4 at page 95.

Next lesson we will finish our timeline by writing the most important information of this period.

I hope that you enjoyed learning History from the beginning of times until today.

ENGLISH TIME: STORY TIME "THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER"

Good Morning kids!!!

How are you today? I hope you are alright. I am fine and ready to begin working.

Today is Wednesday the 13th of May and as every Wednesday it's story time.

I chose a fairy tale that I love "The elves and the shoemaker"

In this story we are going to learn how being kind to people is always worthy. Kindness always pays off.

But let's stop talking and listen to the story while you read it at the same time. Later on you can write your reading report and feel free to make a picture if you feel like it.

Here it's the link for the Reading Report

And here you have the story. Enjoy it!!!

By the way I know yesterday you had problems with the interactive worksheet I'll see if I can upload it again.

Bye, bye!!!

NATURAL SCIENCE: INVENTION OF THE STEAM ENGINE AND THE TELEGRAPH

Hello again children!!!

In Natural Science we continue learning about machines.

Today we are going to learn about a machine that changed History: the STEAM ENGINE (la máquina de vapor) that was invented about 250 years ago.

Before this invention, most objects were made by hand but with the invention of the steam engine, objects could be made by machines. This invention was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution because factories (fábricas) began to be numerous and the artisans and workshops decreased in number.

The steam engine uses hot steam from boiling water to move a wheel in a chain. So this invention was also very important in transportation with ships and trains. A steam train or a steam boat could transport more people and more products faster than a stagecoach (diligencia o coche de caballos) or a sailing boat (barco de vela). This was the transport revolution. Here you have two pictures. The steamboat was used in my village in Galicia when I was a kid!!!

Here you have a short video in connection with this invention that I hope you enjoy

The next invention is the TELEGRAPH that started the communication revolution that continues to our days. The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse in 1,836 and it was the beginning of electronic communication such as we do right now using smartphones or computers.

If you are interested in learning a bit more, here you have a video about this invention.

In your Natural Science book pages 102 - 103 you have some information and more pictures. I'd like you to do exercise 4.

ENGLISH TIME, STORY TIME: LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Good morning kids!!!

How are you today on this spring morning? I wish you are alright. I am fine a bit later than usual because I again had problems with my computer.

But now everything is alright and I can work with sound again. Yesterday afternoon I couldn't hear anything. The kids that were with me in the Zoom meeting know about it.

Wednesday is time for story telling. Today is Wednesday the 6th of May so this time I chose a traditional tale "Little Red Riding Hood"

I know you all know the story but I want you to read and listen at the same time to the story I am going to upload. Once you watch the video and read the story at the same time I want you to write the reading report. I leave in here a link to the one we are using in case it helps you to organize your writing.

And here you have the traditional tale. I hope you enjoy it!!!

Pay attention because the story is in the past tense and I also want you to use the past tense in your reading report, ok?

See you this afternoon for a little while!!!
